This Week in Moab

What is a disability, anyway? Special Education staff discuss person-first teaching on This Week in Moab

“If you only pay attention to the characteristics of a disability’s label, you tend to keep looking at how to mend or fix it, rather than the other side of the coin – here are the strengths that this individual presents.” That’s Grand County School’s Special Education Director Sherrie Buckingham speaking on This Week in Moab. She and others in the local special education department – Ann Austin, Sock Beachum, and Matthew A. Jonassaint – discussed their “person-first” approach to teaching, and how they help the world become more accessible to students with cognitive and physical disabilities. Learn how community-based internships play a critical role in overall education too, by providing students an opportunity to contribute to the Moab community after they leave school. It’s a good conversation, tune in.
