Job Title: Staff Reporter

Tentative start date: 08/16/2021 (contract renewed 08/16/2022 contingent of successful performance review and funding)
Reports to: News Director
Terms: Part-time (20-25 hrs/week), with a 12 month contract
Compensation: $25,200 annual 
KZMU provides a monthly Health & Wellness Stipend, and time off in accordance with KZMU’s Labor Policy.

Description: 

KZMU  is seeking a resourceful, multi-talented journalist to join and help grow our News Department high atop Rocky Road in Moab, Utah. The reporter will assist in reporting and producing local news for KZMU and KZMU.org. We are a noncommercial, independent community radio station serving Moab, Grand County, north to Green River, west to Ghost Rock, south to Monticello, and east just past the Colorado state line. We are the only source for daily local news (Monday – Friday) in our area and we are not an NPR station. Jump to apply.

Job Summary:

The Staff Reporter works under the supervision of the News and Public Affairs Director and is responsible for identifying and reporting on stories throughout KZMU’s listening area, covering a wide range of issues relevant to our varied community and the region. The Staff Reporter will have a strong voice and a professional news delivery that fits into KZMU’s programming and journalistic philosophies. The position is based in Moab, Utah and requires a willingness to be flexible in the work schedule during certain times of the year.

Responsibilities:

• Assist in production of weekday newscasts.
• Develop story ideas, assist in tracking issues and events.
• Produce 2-4 number short spot news pieces per week.
• Produce 2-4 “sound-rich” features per month.
• Provide breaking and emergency news coverage as needed.
• Manage news-related content on KZMU’s website and social media.
• Handle occasional fill-in host duties for weekly public affairs programs.
• Assist in live hosting and panel moderation for occasional remote news broadcasts.
• Participate in all KZMU pledge drives and fundraising events, helping both on the air and off.
• Produces one Audio Portrait per month, or as assigned.
• Attends and participates in all general staff meetings 
• Other duties as assigned by the News Director and/or General Manager
• Develop and maintain a database of local news sources.

Qualifications:

• At least 1 year of experience in journalism or equivalent degree strongly preferred. 
• Familiarity with best practices for digital content and social media
• Demonstrated commitment to accuracy, ethics, and transparency
• Understanding and appreciation of rural communities
• Ability to write for radio, the web, and social media
• Working knowledge of broadcast equipment is preferred.
• A curious mind
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage simultaneous tasks.
• Computer literacy:

1. Hindenburg, Audacity, or similar audio editing software.
2. G Suite.
3. WordPress
4. SoundCloud
5. Social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook).
6. Basic folder organization and navigation for Windows PC.

A collage of coverage! The part-time staff reporter will work on a variety of stories and projects. The reporter will have ample opportunities to work in the field, covering events and conducting interviews on issues important to the Moab area. They will also have studio time, and assist in production and editing work for the newscast and special projects.
