The Mutt of the Week: Dewdrop

Even though she is small, this girl is mighty! Before being rescued, Dewdrop was chasing cars along the highway near Monument Valley. This 20-pound lady thought she was invincible, as cars barreled towards her at 60+mph. The cars would swerve out of the way to avoid hitting her and Dewdrop would just chase right after them barking along the way. When our volunteer arrived at the scene, she watched this happen a couple of times before being able to catch her. Who knows if she thought she was chasing after her family or fighting to survive on the rez.

We see at least two dogs every month that has some sort of leg fracture or cracked ribs likely due to a car accident. Many dogs roam free on the Four Corners reservation and there is nothing preventing them from crossing highways or roads. Thousands of dogs die every year on the rez because of car accidents. So many of our dogs are found next to highways or streets, with no homes in sight for 50+ miles. We are so fortunate to be in a place to rescue these strays before they take a wrong step into the road at the wrong time.

Dewdrop is now safe at Underdog. Our tall fences and gates keep her from chasing more cars. Despite her lack of fear towards cars, she was quite timid when she was rescued. She has since had lots of human interaction to help socialize her. Dewdrop has quite a few scars and tufts of fur missing which is typical of a rez dog. She is in a safe place now that will allow her to recover and blossom into her most beautiful self. Dewdrop is proving to be quite affectionate and loves trotting on walks with our volunteers.

We think that Dewdrop is a mix of pug, chihuahua, and likely some other breeds. She is a year old and is fully grown. Dewdrop is now waiting for her forever home. She does well with children, other dogs, and respects cats. If you can’t adopt and still want to be apart of Dewdrop’s rescue story, reach out to the Underdog team about coming to spend time with her or providing her a foster home.
