Mutt of the Week: Sam

We love how unique this boy looks! Sam came to us from another rescue that is based on the reservation. When we first got Sam we thought he was a baby. However, the vet estimated him to be over six months old. This little one will likely stay little for the rest of his years.

Sam has had a more difficult transition to the ranch than some of our other rez dogs. His small size has not stopped him from being the dominant one in the run. For a while, Sam was clearly in survival mode. He was picked up as a wandering stray and was skin and bones, which combined with his eye markings granted him his ranch nickname of Sam-the-man-the-skele-tan. Sam was very dehydrated and scared of anything that moved. We placed Sam at the front of the rescue to get lots of exposure and he slowly started to come around. Now, Sam is the first pup to rush the gate to get pet and loved on.

Through Underdog’s rehabilitation, Sam knows that food is abundant and love is plentiful. He can still be nervous with other dogs and may start guarding his people and pack. This behavior is likely a result of fighting to survive for his first six months of life on the rez. Despite his rough past, this boy has a ton of love to share and is ready for his forever home.
