(Left) Shannon Lay recorded her entrancing solo album, August (named for the month in 2017 when she quit her day job for good to commit full-time to music) with long-time friend and collaborator Ty Segall at his East Side home studio. The result, true to her own words, ‘speaks to the visceral aspect of folk music’ and creates ‘this spot by the river where people can go sit and enjoy.’ (Right) Victoria, BC art-pop quintet Bridal Party set out to make pop music they like, and the result on their debut album Too Much is nutritious ear candy that will entice any fun-loving person, offering what has been described as “a perfect marriage of indie pop and soul.” (Think Crumb meets The Cardigans.) Check out the video for the title track below. Also below, The Dead South with their video for “In Hell I’ll Be In Good Company” from their 2014 album In Good Company. (Their new album Sugar & Joy drops in October.) Reminding me of the growling, rumbling train style of bluegrass that Mumford & Sons have long personified, I’ve also included a throwback to one of the best parody music videos of all time!

**Best musician to quit their day job: Shannon Lay: August
**Best marriage of psych soul and dream pop: Bridal Party: Too Much
**Best bedtime story for adults narrated by a British punk rock icon: The Flaming Lips: Kings Mouth
**Best reminder of the thriving music scene in Denton, TX: Señor Fin: Hardly Alone
**Best debut blending R&B, Soul, and Jazz with all the sophistication of Jill Scott and Erykah Badu: Bryony Jarman-Pinto:
Cage & Aviary
**Best musical power couple to dismantle the establishment: G&D: Black Love & War
**Best musical phoenix to rise from the ashes of poverty and substance abuse: Sunny War: Shell of a Girl
**Best continued example that what’s happening on the fringes of country is far better than anything coming out of the
mainstream: Esther Rose: You Made It This Far
**Best self-produced songwriter from down under you probably have never heard of (but now you have): Robert Reid:
