Lift Up: Josh Patterson

Lift Up is a KZMU storytelling project intending to deepen understanding and empathy within our community and reinforce a sense of safety and belonging for all. 

Our next Lift Up storyteller is Joshua Patterson. A two-year transplant, Josh hopes to one day be considered a full Moabite. He is currently working on a degree in history in hopes to be a history teacher. He lives with his husband, and enjoys reading, video games, and eating as much Filipino food he can get.

Lift Up: Erin Trim

Lift Up is a KZMU storytelling project intending to deepen understanding and empathy within our community and reinforce a sense of safety and belonging for all. 

Our next Lift Up storyteller is Erin Trim. After a youth of many moves, Erin found a home and community in Moab in 2008. You can find them immersed in creative projects, bopping around town chatting with folks, reading at the park, listening to music, roller skating, road-tripping, and playing outside with their dog or sipping tea with their cats.

Lift Up: Kaitlin Myers

Our next Lift Up storyteller is Kaitlin Myers, a housing advocate, rafter, and glitter enthusiast. She moved to Moab as an Americorps VISTA from Tampa, FL and has lived here year-round for 7 years. She is currently the Executive Director of Moab Community Land Trust. When she’s not working, she’s hanging with friends, attending community events, rafting, swimming, or bedazzling.

Lift Up Season 1 – Sylvia Bentley and Matthew A. Jonassaint

Pride Month is a time to celebrate and honor the impact the LGBTQ+ community has on our shared history. So during this final week of June, KZMU News is revisiting Season 1 of Lift Up: LGBTQ+ Visibility. We’ll hear many local stories and perspectives, including thoughts on creating and protecting queer joy in our community. 

KZMU News · Lift Up Season 1 – Sylvia Bentley and Matthew A. Jonassaint

Our final storytellers this week are Sylvia Bentley and Matthew A. Jonassaint. Sylvia was born and raised in Moab but left when she was 18 to pursue a degree at the base of the Wasatch Mountains in Utah County. Later she found herself in the dry north coast of Peru digging up bones, which somehow landed her in the rainy north coast of Spain teaching English. She later returned to the desert where her essence, soul and DNA feels at home. Sylvia spends her time with family and loved ones and occasionally wanders the desert, wondering how to chase the horizon and put down roots at the same time. Matthew was born in the Utah Valley to Caribbean parents. As an undergrad he co-chaired his university’s queer student association, and his capstone project involved archiving queer history, literature, philosophy and films. His work has been published in various places including peculiar – the first queer literary journal in Utah. He first landed in Moab during Pride Week in October 2012 and has been living here permanently since 2018.

Our fourth storyteller is Sallie Hodges, who moved to Moab in 2004, from Los Angeles, California. Born in Bristol, England, they gained a Communications BA honors degree in Film, Video and Photographic Arts, which ultimately led to the film industry. Sallie is now a self-declared artist specializing in tintype portraiture and film. They advocate for the acceptance and introduction of non-gendered bias in our institutions and culture in the hopes of a more equitable future for all.

His work seeks the connection and coincidence of progressive leadership, rural autonomy, and community resilience. He is fueled by the instance that things truly splendid will inevitably eclipse the traumatic rot of our time. May it be our job to amplify and perpetuate all the very good things we live among.

Our second storyteller is Nicole Croke, a lover of art and the outdoors. They work in environmental conservation, managing logistics for field crews and hope that by showing up as a queer woman in a leadership role, they can help the field feel more accessible to a broader group of people. When they aren’t teaching young adults to operate chainsaws or identify invasive species, they enjoy rafting, crafting, and soaking up desert sun.

We begin with Laura DeFrain, a trauma-informed yoga, climbing, and mindfulness instructor. They have never considered themselves to be particularly ‘athletic’ but they developed a passion for intuitive movement on their own trauma-healing journey. They began teaching in an effort to help support others in healing and also cultivate more queer and non-binary representation in both climbing and yoga.

Lift Up – Zachary Johnson

Lift Up is a KZMU storytelling project intending to deepen understanding and empathy within our community and reinforce a sense of safety and belonging for all. 

Our next Lift Up storyteller is Zachary Johnson. A long-time Moab resident, Zachary grew up here and graduated from Grand County High School. He’s worked in Moab’s hospitality industry most of his life. He is fluent in Spanish, and loves that he’s able to speak the language with his coworkers everyday. Zachary enjoys hikes with his boyfriend and two dogs.
