Bruni rings the bells – Audio Portrait

If you experienced an emergency in Moab and had nowhere else to turn, Moab Solutions is an organization that could help. All year long, the nonprofit fields calls for emergency lodging, gas, food and even medicine. About one third of the funding Moab Solutions needs to support these calls is raised in a few weeks by bell ringers. Today on the news, we have an audio portrait of long time bell-ringing volunteer, Bruni Mason.

Kara Dohrenwend – Audio Portrait

When Kara Dohrenwend moved to Moab in the early 1990s, she remembers the creek system in town was basically invisible, covered in invasive plant species like tamarisk and Russian olive. With a background in community-driven design and restoration work, Dohrenwend quickly got involved. She’s now worked for over two decades restoring the creek ecosystem. All these years later, it remains fascinating to her. Even after Mill Creek plotted its course through her own home one day this summer. “I have actually joked that Mill Creek really did go out of its way to flood my house. It really did. It went uphill.”

With his white van full of cat supplies, local Travis Garcia looks out for community cats living in and around the Walnut Lane Trailer Park. He feels for these animals, especially those who have suffered from disease or infection. “As I get older, I sympathize with everything a little bit better, you know? Moab Pride Library with Desirae Miller – Audio Portrait

“Books take you to different worlds, and you get to tap into so many different realities that you really can’t do in a rural town,” says Desirae Miller. “…And that is what Moab Pride strives to be able to provide – these safe spaces in a rural town where you otherwise maybe wouldn’t feel seen.”

For about a year, locals seeking information about marginalized communities have had a safe, comfortable community space to check out resources. Literally. The Moab Pride Library lives in a shady nook at Adobe Garden Apothecary. It’s a space where people peruse everything from queer literature to Black and Indigenous history. Moab Pride organizer Desirae Miller took us on a tour of the library for our latest audio portrait.

Mike ‘Marlow’ Mewborn – Audio Portrait

“I often say my life seems to revolve around three things – my dog, my bike and my laptop…And that’s the way I want it,” says Mike Mewborn, known to locals as Marlow. You’ve likely seen him riding his recumbent bicycle in town with his dog trotting by his side. Marlow is a glimpse into Moab’s past and, for some, a potential future. For our latest audio portrait, we catch up with him on the shores of the Colorado River.

Today we speak with Annie Thomas, the founder and executive director of Our Village Community Center. The nonprofit stewards an orchard that once belonged to the late Ray Alger. We speak with Thomas about their orchard revitalization project and connecting Moab’s historic past to its future.

For some locals, warmer weather means one thing – skate season. Skate Moab recently held their first event of the season and has big plans to bring the ‘joy of skating’ to the local community the rest of the year. Today on the news, an audio portrait of the person leading Skate Moab events this year, Jazmine Duncan. And later, a new documentary tells the story of the Mojave Desert tortoise as Washington County officials plan to put a road through protected habitat. And, tribes rebuilding bison herds are getting help from an unlikely source.

Sarah Fields is an expert in uranium. From her base in Moab, she’s researched all things radioactive in Utah since 2006. Her one-woman organization Uranium Watch fights for environmental protection and clean-up around the region. “These were things that were affecting my life, affecting my family, affecting my community,” says Fields. “And I just found I started learning about one thing and then I learned about something else. And it’s been a big center of my life for several years.” Today on the news, Fields tours La Sal-area uranium mines currently on stand-by for our latest audio portrait.

The Aneth Point Downs racetrack is a focal point for communities in southeastern Utah. “That’s pretty much what I do,” said horse trainer Broderick Lee, who was raised on the track. “As soon as I get off work, I come to the horse corral and start tying them up, grooming them, getting them ready to go exercise. And that’s how I grew up – loving horses and everything.” Lee spoke to KZMU News for our latest audio portrait. Plus, after their regional paleontologist assessed the Mill Canyon Dinosaur Tracksite, the BLM has acknowledged ‘unacceptable’ damage occurred to the 112-million-year-old resource during a work project.
