In March 2008, a group of Moab filmmakers took part in the International Documentary Challenge, a contest in which teams must produce a documentary in five days. The event attracted 122 teams from sixteen countries. The Moab team consisted of Laurel Collins, Neal Herbert, Josie Kovash, Emily Niehaus, Chad Thomas and Pippa Thomas. Their entry, Fiercely Independent tells the story of KZMU and its place as the lone voice of volunteer-driven, community radio in Utah.
Only twenty two entries were given awards. The Moab team received a Special Judges Award for "Best Social Commentary."
